Workers in Winter: Things To Consider

Roofing problems can occur at any point of the year, even during winter. The average temperature in North America can drop down to 33.2 °F, just above freezing point, so when the time comes that you need roofing repairs in the middle of a snowy season, help yourself by considering everything that needs to be done in general, and assist the workers as much as you can. Is it alright for roofers to work while it’s snowing outside? Roofing expert Diamond Roofing Specialists, Inc. is here to help!

Prepare Beforehand

Make it easier for the workers that will work on your roof. They’re already going to work while it’s freezing outside, so they will greatly appreciate you preparing to make their workflow better. You can also boost their morale and improve their quality of work if you offer them hot drinks or a warm rest area that is separate from your family or staff. If you’re going to have workers repair your home’s roof, have everything that can obstruct foot traffic properly removed or covered to avoid any issues. If you own a business and the commercial roofing needs addressing, inform everyone within the building of the incoming repairs and have your staff remove any obstructions in the halls and areas leading to the repair area.

Worker Equipment

Making considerations for the worker’s equipment is also important. Since roofing projects in the middle of winter are vastly different from those done in other seasons, do expect that it might take a longer time to finish than normal. Roofers are human and are susceptible to the cold. Some of their tools and equipment are the same. Compressors and nail guns, for example, are temperature sensitive. Since they involve air pressure and humidity, the cold climate can freeze the airlines and reduce the airflow the workers need to work properly. Be considerate of their working conditions and their equipment.

Roofing Materials

The roofing materials themselves are also susceptible to the cold climate. Roofing shingles, for instance, can lose their flexibility and can become brittle and hard as they are exposed to frigid conditions, making it harder for workers to bend them or cut them. Specific roofing materials are designed to be installed in certain weather conditions and climates, and most roofing installations work better when done in the proper time and season, specifically during fall. So when you have workers doing repairs on your roof during winter, it would be best to consider that they will take a longer time since they’ll have to do things manually like hand-sealing or manually pressing every shingle into the roofing cement.
